Ice and Snow

Image
Peter, Kim and I spent close to 3 hours clearing the trees from the road. 23 of them! I slept well that night (from exhaustion) and I'm sure Peter and Kim did also.. Here are some pictures.. March 12th.   And then it started to snow.  The trip to 911 is beautiful.. March 14th. You can drive under this one leaning across the road. The forecast is for more snow this coming week. And rain. Rumor is that Spring is around the corner. Ed

March 11 2026 Ice Storm

Image
We experienced a major ice storm today. Power has been out since about 3 pm and we are running our generators. Here are some pictures I took today during the ice storm. I drove from our place to the top of Maple Hill - Terry Young's gates. It started to ice rain heavily so I did not venture out to 911 from the top of the hill. I will tomorrow and will post again. Many branches came down, but I did not see any trees on the road. I may tomorrow when I go to 911. The picture below is at John J's place where some larger branches came down. Luckily John had moved 2 snowmobiles from this spot earlier. Here is a view of the lake from our place. And a view of our place at the back. At 11 pm the temperature is registering almost 3 degrees and the wind has picked up. Ice from the branches is melting and dropping. For those that know our place with the wall of windows on the lake side, the ice from the branches hitting those windows sounds a bit scary... the dogs sure think so.

Development Update

I saw this today on the Baptiste Lake - Hastings Highland Facebook page: Unfortunately I was unable to increase the size of the above. For those with Facebook, you should be able to view this at:   https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17wFrqoB1u/ In addition, check out the Haliburton WEB site: https://www.haliburtoncounty.ca/en/planning-and-maps/planning-services.aspx#Active-Plan-of-SubdivisionCondominium-Applications

Sad News

John Jamieson requests that the following information be posted: John was informed by Ralph Woodcock's grandson that he has passed away. His death was assisted. Ralph's grandson works out west in the oil fields and is planning on moving back to Bancroft. Ralph had his property logged just before John did at 911. Ralph has a cabin on Tusk, top of mousetrap, south side. Usually had a red line across the lane and a red fire hydrant. RIP Ralph Woodcock.

Travel Info - Road conditions

Image
Clarke Road that is maintained by the town has not been sanded, salted or plowed. They estimate that it will be by 5:00 PM today. Please note that many of the roads in the area are under the same "Significant Weather Declared" advisory. There is snow on top of the ice at 911. Parking is ok. View up Clarke Road to the town. I drove about 100 yards on it and then came back to 911. Best to wait until it is sanded / salted before driving on it. View of Clarke Road to the lake. It's fine for tracked machines.  One rotten tree was down on Boston Hill. It has been cleared.

Freezing Rain Update

Image
Peter made it out to 911. "Took a trip out to the mill to assess if Kim can get to Barrie today. Clarke road is glare ice and completely impassible. If anyone has guest coming I suggest they postpone until later today or tomorrow." The deck and table were clear yesterday. This morning covered in ice. Blowing snow. The wind is very strong.

Sunday before the freezing rain.

We had several inches of snow fall over the past few days. The parking lot at 911 has been cleared. The road in from 911 has been groomed. Both are in great shape thanks to John and Peter!  A couple of pictures of the road snowmobiling in from 911. Came across two of these on the road this morning. It has started to rain and with the forecast calling for it all night, we will see how the conditions are tomorrow....
